HLS – Williamsburg offers instruction in core subjects using the award-winning Memoria Press curriculum in a one-day-per-week cottage school setting. Our goal is to offer a challenging, traditional academic experience that enlivens the mind and refines the soul.
We are classical. As a classical school, HLS – Williamsburg teaches Latin as a core academic subject. Focused, systematic instruction in Latin is taught each year beginning in second grade. Instruction begins with a gentle, age-appropriate introduction, then progresses through mastery of the Latin grammar, and culminates in the reading and translating of authentic Latin texts. In addition to the study of Latin, as a classical school we emphasize a focused study of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome as well as the reading of classic texts from the canon of Great Books broadly to learn and consider the best that has been thought and said in history and literature throughout the ages.
We are Christian. Our days begin and end in prayer, and students receive instruction in Bible literacy and scripture memory. All instruction is taught from a Christian perspective. With the Apostle’s Creed as our Statement of Faith, we are committed to an ecumenical learning environment where students of all Christian denominations feel welcomed. Doctrinal teaching is the privilege of parents.
We are traditional. Orderly classrooms are joyful classrooms. All classes are taught by a trained teacher with students seated in rows, facing forward, and ready to learn. Students are instructed in accuracy, attention to detail, and mastery in all subjects using repetition, memorization, and recitation.
In all we do, we seek to engender a love for the Good, the True, and the Beautiful.
