HLS Stillwater provides a full day, 8:00 – 3:30, of instruction for our primary grades of pre-school – 2nd grade. On Monday teachers will cover all subjects and introduce any new concepts. Mornings focus on academic work and afternoons focus on literature and enrichment. Teachers will also work with parents on what needs to be accomplished throughout the rest of the week. Our teachers are guides for homeschooling families. They help parents navigate the curriculum and focus on the mountains not the mole hills.
Eligibility & Readiness: At HLS Stillwater we are not in a rush in helping you give your student a great education. It is more important that we set families and students up for success rather than boast how fast our student(s) graduate. Resources are available to evaluate students and place them appropriately!
Pre-School: Students in this class are 3-5 years old and potty trained. Monday will be full of activities, crafts, and read allows. There is no expected work to be done at home with these students and no curriculum that needs to be followed. This class is reserved for children of teachers or for those families that have students in other grades. However, we keep a waiting list of families that do not meet previous criteria. If we have seats available, we will offer to wait list families.
Junior Kindergarten: Student in this class are usually 4-6 years old. Focus of this class is learning how to learn and foundational skills: holding pencil, raising hand, how to sit and sit still, learning correct posture, and building macro and minor motor skills. Students will be learning these skills while working through the Two Day Junior-Kindergarten Memoria Press Curriculum. Families are expected to work with their student and complete assignments throughout the week.
Kindergarten: Students in this class are usually 5-7 years old. The primary goal of kindergarten is learning to read. Additional goals of no less importance are: correct pencil grip, correct letter and number formation, and basic arithmetic, including counting, addition, subtraction, telling time, and counting money. The Memoria press Kindergarten Curriculum we utilize is designed for reading-ready children. These are students with the ability to count to ten, print their names, recognize most letters, rhyme words, and segment sounds. Our curriculum has been carefully developed over many years at Highlands Latin School
First Grade: Picking up where Kindergarten left off, your first grader will continue to master their phonics, math, reading and handwriting. Along with an enrichment program that explores art, music, and poetry. The First Grade Classical Core Curriculum is a complete classical Christian curriculum that emphasizes the traditional liberal arts of language and mathematics and the cultural heritage of the Christian West as expressed in the great works of history and literature.
Second Grade: Picking up where first grade left off, your second grader will continue to master their phonics, math, reading and handwriting. Along with an enrichment program that explores art, music, and poetry. As a second grader, your student will be introduced to Latin. Students will also experience some test taking with the Latin and math curriculum. Other new subjects are also introduced for your child to continue expanding their classical studies.

During the grammar school grades of 3rd-6th, we are building on the foundation formed in the Primary Years and setting students up for success in Upper School, Grades 7-12. What distinguishes a classical, Christian school and HLS Stillwater is that it prioritizes for its students not simply knowledge, but wisdom, and affords not only content but character.
Pursuing a Classical Education: To have a true classical education, a student has learned Latin, has an understanding of history and ancient cultures, and has read the great books broadly. A student who receives a classical education shares an experience and a common body of knowledge with extraordinary men and women of centuries past.
The classical curriculum begins in earnest in the grammar school, where students memorize the Latin grammar, followed by the logic stage in grades 7-8, where they study syntax and translation, and finally grades 9-12, where students read Latin literature. Latin, however, is not the only concern of a classical education. Reading the classics is also vitally important. The best there is in literature and history civilizes the mind. It teaches those human qualities that children are simply not born with such as unselfishness, compassion, courage, integrity, honesty, and justice. We select the very best literature in every grade and have the best faculty that can bring these works alive in the classroom and draw out all that is good and true and beautiful. Literature, history, and great role models are some of the best tools we have to accomplish one of our most important goals at HLS Stillwater which is character development.
Prioritizing Core Subjects: Every minute of our school day is precious; we know that. We must prioritize. Though there are many, many good options, choosing what is the BEST use of our time is what distinguishes a great school. With conscientious planning and dedication to a purposeful goal, we have found that our students are capable of amazing feats. We utilize the Memoria Press curriculum, which provides continuity and order for our students, and focus on four core subjects—Latin, Classical Studies, Literature, Logic and Classical Composition. These courses honor the classical tradition and maximize the benefits of the traditional classroom setting for lecture and group discussion
Partnering with HLS Stillwater: The success of your student at HLS Stillwater is two-fold – attending Classroom Days and completing Home Study Days. All new material for each lesson is introduced on Monday during class. Assignments for Home Study Days include review, completion of Student Guides, and preparation for the next class. Tests and quizzes, when assigned, will be completed at home, checked by the parent, then corrected and submitted to the instructor for review. This allows the teachers to adjust the lecture time accordingly.
Memoria Press Curriculum In the years leading up to upper school, students work diligently to acquire the classical skills of mastering the Latin grammar, reading deeply, writing clearly and beautifully, and calculating precisely. Upper school students translate traditional Latin works, develop persuasive and logical arguments, delve deep in classic literature (Shakespeare, worthy novels, poetry, and philosophy), study linguistic logic and Aristotelian rhetoric, refine heightened mathematical skill, explore areas of science, and perhaps most importantly, do so under the leadership of master teachers and with a small group of like-minded peers. This is truly a fellowship of learning. We pursue wisdom and virtue together.
HLS Stillwater offers a full day of grade-specific core classes on Monday from 8:00am – 3:40pm for students in 7th – 12th grade. The upper grade day is broken up into six class periods. All classes except Math meet only on Mondays. Math classes: Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, & Algebra II will meet in person on Monday and a second time virtually later in the week.
Students have two options:
- Full-time students will take a class in each of the six periods. Specific courses will be selected based on previous classes completed and grade of student. Each full-time student will have a class in: Math, Latin, Literature, & Composition. Also, depending on the age and grade of the student they will also study two of the four: Classical-Christian Studies, Modern History, Logic, or Science.
- A la cart students have the ability to take specific class(es). A la cart students are able to take one class or all the way up to five classes. Students on campus while not in class will have the opportunity for study hall.

As students grow in their ability to take responsibility, information transfer between school and home will be handled in increasing measures through the student using the Student Planner & Google Classroom.
