How does a hybrid classical Christian school work?

Highlands Latin Cottage School Charleston offers classes for grades kindergarten through twelve on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 to 3:00 pm. The remaining three school days are completed at home with guidance and specific assignments from our teachers, making an HLS education feel like a hybrid of homeschooling and private school. Our students are legally homeschoolers or home-educated (“unbundler”) ESTF participants.

We provide quarterly report cards for grades 3+, lesson and testing accountability, a Christian intellectual community, and a traditional classroom environment. Our traditional classrooms are led by skilled and enthusiastic teachers who require respect, focused engagement, personal responsibility, and adherence to the specific rules of our code of conduct.

Classroom demeanor is a high priority at our school. Our teachers foster an atmosphere of respect and order that prevents most misbehavior before it begins. When correction is needed, it is given clearly and calmly, with a reminder of classroom expectations. If misbehavior continues, the student may be removed from the classroom and the parents notified.

At HLS Charleston we aim to develop character in our students through the hard work of rigorous academics, membership in a strong Christian community, and consistent enforcement of the school rules. We value each student as a child of God and partner with parents to help our students grow in Christian faith and virtue.

Why HLS? Learn More About the HLS Model

We are very proud of our teachers here at HLS Charleston! Our hiring process is careful and thorough. We make hiring and placement decisions based on subject expertise, teaching experience, classroom management ability, and individual commitment to the classical model. Moreover, our teachers receive ongoing feedback, including in-class teacher observation, to ensure that they are meeting the expectations of the school and covering the subject matter thoroughly.

Our accrediting body (Classical Latin School Association) does not require individual teacher certification, and we have not found it to be an indicator of excellence in teaching. Many of our teachers have had years of teaching experience within the school system, the homeschool setting, and in higher education. In fact, many of our upper-school teachers are world-class college professors still making their mark in their own fields! Our teachers create a culture of respect and order within the classroom and find it a joy to teach our enthusiastic, yet responsible and thoughtful HLS students.

Feel free to read about our teachers and staff below!

Dr. Edward Francisco
Literature 7

Dr. Edward Francisco is a writer and retired professor of English with forty years of teaching experience. He is the author of ten books and another forthcoming. Last year was his first teaching literature and composition at HLS. Each of his students was extraordinary, as was his experience teaching them.

We believe that even as students are called to excellence in their academic pursuits, kids still need time to be kids! Rigor and wonder are not at odds; rather, they flourish together when children are allowed time to play, imagine, explore, and grow.

Students have time before school and during afternoon pick-up to assemble and greet their friends. Each day, students in grades K-2 have at least 1.5 hours of lunch and recess time outdoors, and students in grades 3-12 have at least one hour of lunch and recess time each day. In addition, we have recitation days, classroom celebrations, field trips, park meet-ups, service projects, and other events organized by HLS teachers and families to provide social opportunities for students and families during the school year.

How does HLS foster a safe environment?

We feel privileged to be entrusted with precious children and strive to protect them. Each of our faculty and staff completes Safeguarding God’s Children training and must pass a background check. We strictly adhere to the rules of a carefully crafted faculty handbook that provides multiple layers of protection from child abuse. In addition, we have physical security infrastructure and emergency planning to protect our students against outside threats. We maintain communication with parents throughout the school year to address health and safety concerns, and we continue to welcome conversation with parents who have further questions about our safety and security measures.
