About

Docere, Delectare, Movere
– To Teach, To Delight, To Move –

Highlands Latin cottage schools follow the model of our mother school, Highlands Latin School in Louisville, KY. Highlands Latin Cottage School – Beaufort meets two days a week, Tuesday and Thursday, for classroom instruction and then partners with parents who provide supplemental, individualized instruction with assignments and classwork throughout the week. As a Highlands Latin cottage school, we operate under Highlands Latin School, adopting the formula, standards, and many benefits of being part of the Highlands Latin family, while also reaping the benefit of being at home and learning with our families; it is the best of both worlds.

Mission Statement

In partnership with parents, and guided by the Gospel, we strive to educate students to the highest standards of the classical tradition, so that they may grow in knowledge, wisdom, and the love of Our Lord, and more ably use their gifts in the service of others, and for the glory of Christ and his Church.

Highlands Latin Cottage School Beaufort

Offers children in grades K-12 two days a week of classroom instruction and community. From 8 am to 3:30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays students will have classroom instruction in Latin, classical studies, literature, composition, grammar, and American studies/science.

On the days that children are home, parents will provide support, individual instruction, and review as they complete the required home assignments together and prepare for school days. Parents are still required to be registered under a homeschool legal umbrella for South Carolina.

This will require families to use the full core curriculum for their children from Memoria Press. On home days parents will know exactly what is to be completed together.

Our Beaufort campus will meet at Okatee Baptist Church for the 2022/2023 school year. This campus is a central spot making it about a 15-20 minute drive for families in Beaufort, Bluffton, Ridgeland, and surrounding areas. Here we have access to an abundance of classrooms and lovely grounds for everyone to enjoy.

Statement of Faith

The faith statement of Highlands Latin School is the Apostles’ Creed, the most ancient and widely accepted expression of the essential beliefs of the Christian faith:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried; The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cottage school?

Cottage schools are schools that meet one to two days a week with teachers and peers for in-class instruction. HLSB teachers are qualified and trained in effective implementation of the classical model and delight in giving your children a truly beautiful, wholesome classical education.

On alternate days, students work under the guidance of their parents to complete homework, recitation, review, and prepare for class. The cottage school model allows flexibility in the family schedule while providing instruction, structure, and accountability. HLSB families will know exactly what to complete on the days they are home.

Is this a co-op?

A cottage school is not the same as a co-op. In a co-op, parents join together to instruct the participating children. What co-ops offer can vary from arts and crafts to science and history, to offering just extracurricular classes. Co-op groups can be great venues for families, but HLSB is not a co-op; it is a school.

We hire and train professional teachers in implementing the classical method so that each student gets the best classical instruction. Students are in class for two full school days a week, parents do not join their children in class. We are curriculum centric in that our entire school uses Memoria Press, both in school and at home. Teachers prep for every class, instruct, communicate, and grade all work done on school days as well as any homework turned in. Progress reports are given to parents every trimester. We operate as a private school on school days.

We believe this approach to classical education is the “best of both worlds” as we partner together with parents to provide a high academic standard and valuable classical education, while the parents and home maintain the primary influence over their child’s education.

What will days at Highlands Latin School look like?

While the final schedule is not complete yet, this is an example of what you can expect from a day at HLSB:

-7:45 am: Student drop off begins.

Students are expected to be present in the opening assembly at 8 am.

-8:00am- 8:15am: Morning Assembly

The school assembles together each morning to pray, pledge, recite, sing a hymn, and go over any announcements or changes for the day before classes begin.

– 8:15 to 11:45 am: In-class instruction time

Children receive in-class instruction from their teachers with breaks for fresh air. The break for K-2nd grade will be longer.

-11:45 to 12:45: Lunch

We eat together as a school and follow lunch with school-wide outdoor time as weather permits.

-12:45- 3:15pm: In class instruction.

Students return to their classes for instruction until the end of the day, 3:15, in which students will gather their belongings, help clean up their classrooms and prepare for the car line.

Kindergarten will have a thirty-minute rest time after recess before continuing instruction.

-3:30 pm: Dismissal.

Parents may begin lining up in the car line at 3:10 but no earlier, to ensure that we do not block traffic for the church any longer than necessary.

What is my role and responsibility as a parent?

By enrolling your child at Highlands Latin Cottage School – Beaufort, parents are committing to partnering with us to give their children a wholesome classical Christian education.

Parents are committing to having their children at school on school days, prepared and ready with home assignments completed, and ready to learn.

Parents are committing to using Memoria Press core curriculum with their children at home and offering them instruction and guidance on the assigned homework and review three days a week.

Parents are committing to communicating with their children’s HLSB teachers. Giving feedback, asking any questions, addressing any concerns, and doing their part to keep the line of communication open with teachers.

Parents are committing to a volunteer day at the school once every trimester.

We do not have experience with Classical Education, will my child/ren be able to keep up?

Students from all academic backgrounds will benefit from the time-tested methods of the classical approach. With Memoria Press, each year builds into the next, and we work with families to ensure children are placed in the class in which they will thrive. Many children have transitioned successfully into a classical education at any grade.

My child/ren have never studied Latin, will he/she be behind?

Many new students have never taken a Latin class; your child is not alone! Our Latin classes are taught by level, not by grade. This means that each Latin class will have students from varying, but appropriate, grade levels together. This ensures that every new Latin student can start at the beginning and work their way up without being behind.
